I have said it before and I will say it again, I love this guy and would literally love to go on a trip with him to any destination. When things seemed to slow down with destination truth (SyFy), I figured that I would just keep watching the re-runs because at least I still got a little bit of his snarky humor and jovial anecdotes on his travels. I personally liked the format of the show because it took a clinical approach to seeking out things that we all think about at some point like the Yeti or Big Foot and it took the time to investigate the stories that we tend to read about and simply walk away from. My favorite episode is the one where he goes back to re-investigate the area around ‘Stonehenge’ and his former camera man has another experience there. Its griping to see how freaky it is in other parts of the world, and the creep factor just rises every time he goes somewhere else, like the time he went to check out the Chupacabra. I like the honesty and then the analysis they they do once their investigation is over. His banter with Ryder is always good for a chuckle. So, you can imagine that I was disappointed when I was relegated to re-runs. So…you can imagine how excited I got when I realized that he had a new show on the travel channel. Yes, people Josh is back with a new show. So the excitement is real, its called Expedition Unknown and it will premiere on Thursday, January 8th at 9:00p. He is going to cover such critical and eye catching topics as what really happened to Amelia Earhart’s plane? or Who is D. B. Cooper and did he survive? I for one am looking forward to what he will uncover during his adventures. His sarcasm is unparalleled in a world where way too many people take themselves far too seriously. So if you have not yet discovered this rare comical traveler then take a moment to set your DVR to record his new show.
I am a totally invested couch potato when it comes to the shows that I watch. Every season, I have a spreadsheet that I concoct filled with information that I use to persuade my family and friends into which shows they should be watching, I have even been known to enforce this on unsuspecting co-wokers at times. Just the same for the past few years NCIS was always at the top of that list. I had fallen in love with Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and his rules. I loved the way he says so much with his eyes and body movement and so little comes out of his mouth. He has an efficiency with words that I could never quite master in my real life. I always thought that if I could hold back a bit more and keep it simpler, life might be a bit simpler, but that is not always the way of things. I could sit here and wax poetic about how cool Tony DiNozzo is, or how cool McGee is and how much I love Abby and her quick wit or Ducky and his bowties. The truth of the matter is that, while I loved Kate (Sasha Alexander) before she was fatally shot to death on the roof of that building, the love affair was not totally solidified until Ziva David walked onto the scene. Ziva is an assassin for Moussad and she can kill you with her thumb. That is something to aspire to if only in your imaginary mind. I loved that she couldn’t drive and didn’t care what you thought about how bad her driving was. She had this quiet warmth about her underneath the tough exterior that spoke to me. Hell, I would give anything to be able to gut punch someone and have it really hurt when I did it. I strongly doubt that I could deliver that kind of blow without simultaneously breaking something on my person like my foot, when I should have used my hand. She and Gibbs had this understanding, he had held attributes that her father never showed. He wasn’t a kind man, and while he was her father, he had a distance in him that translated in the things that he did and never said. So when he was killed, I figured that it would change her. There is always guilt in a situation like that, and I worried that she would have a hard time coming back from it. I didn’t expect her to decide to up and leave the dang show though. So to be honest, it has taken me quite some time to come to terms with it. Now if you know me, then you know that I will boycott a show in heart beat if I strongly disagree with the direction that they have taken; relegating a once beloved show to me into something I have collecting in my DVR to never to be bothered to watch again. You can feel free to reference my CSI years here. The minute that they got rid of Grissom I was done with them, and while I love Ted Dansen even he was not enough to bring me back from the brink. So when Ziva left and Tony had to watch her go, I just figured that I would be fair. I didn’t want to give up on yet another show. I tried, I really really tried people. I have barely watched this season. Its actually recording right now and I am not watching it. I have given my full attention to Gotham, Sleepy Hollow, hell I have even given my full attention to How to get away with murder, but I cannot bring my self to care about the story anymore. I feel listless watching it because I always figured that my true love was Gibbs, and that over time I would be ok with Ziva leaving. Now I am starting to feel like, maybe I was wrong and this feeling will not be going away any time soon. Its not that I don’t still love Gibbs, but honestly, I feel like we need to get a new assassin or something. Not a replacement for Ziva because that won’t work, but something a bit different. I don’t know maybe someone who is more challenging for Tony or heck I would even be ok bringing on that Coast Guard commander who is like the female version of Gibbs. I couldn’t be a writer on this show, honestly but I literally feel like I can’t be the only person who is not feeling the love this season. Jeez, I can barely sink my teeth into NCIS: New Orleans and that is literally one of my most favorite places in the whole entire world. So who out there has had something like this happen to them. I can’t possibly be the only one. This is literally almost as bad as replacement of ‘becky’ on Roseanne. So who can commiserate, I know I couldn’t possibly be the only one annoyed over here…..Anyone?
Ok so in continuation with my recent DVD series, I took a gamble and decided to watch the Immortals. This was recently in theaters, and seemed to do ok based on the lack of random death threats and complaints from those patrons exiting the theater. To refresh, the movie stars, Henry Cavill, Freida Pinto, Mickey Rourke and Stephen Dorff.
Spoiler Alert for those who plan to rent and/or purchase this movie….
So the movie starts out very simply with a back ground recap with a great voice over by John Hurt. The plot is laid out where you find young Theseus and the Virginal Oracle in their respective backgrounds. Now let me just say that I did like this movie and I did find it entertaining. I was even able to overlook Mickey Rourke single handedly turning me off from the task of eating for the rest of my life, especially fruit.
However, I just felt they could have tried a bit harder with the set design. While the overall movie takes place in a few spots the scope of the set was so narrow that it gave the feel that they were only making minimal changes to the set and calling them different locations. Case in point the village that Theseus is leaving seems to only have a small wall and road on which to walk, and the only thing located there is the temple that everyone prays at. Then there is the matter of the Hyperion underlings, what in the blue blazes was that???? Ok I get it they are into the whole torture scene and really subscribe to S&M weekly but you have one priest cutting out his own tongue and, one guy getting his face hacked up like a tribes man and another three oracles that were totally badass btw, getting fresh roasted in tin bull.
As one that can truly appreciate fantasy and actually sat through blade runner without crying, I feel that the studio should have given them more money for that set, because for me, I found myself over thinking the whole thing. Is that a bit of an english accent coming through on Theseus; yes readers these are the things I was readily asking out loud during the entire movie.
Out of 4 stars I am giving this title 3.25. Its not bad, the action sequences are totally worth it and most of the R rating is mostly due to some very gory scenes. Oh and if you are in any way an animal rights activist just skip it all together there is a scene in there that is just not for you.
Happy viewing until next time……
I still haven’t had a chance to put my own stuff aside to read the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins but apparently this trilogy is getting the Hollywood seal of approval because it is going to be a movie. Yes, they just can’t stop making movies out of the best-selling YA books.
The cast is suppose to have Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song, Knowing), Elizabeth Banks (Zack & Miri Make a Porno, The Next Three Days), Josh Hutcherson (The Kids are All Right, The Bridge to Terebithia) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone, X-men:First Class). The series is a sci-fi series based in a postapocalyptic North America. This new world is savage and ruled by fear, with even young children being used as pawns to further the existing government. There is a love triangle that plays out and the kids in some instances fight to the death.
The movie is expected to hit theaters March 23, 2012
Apparently all of the rumors are true or at least as close to true as it gets in Hollywood. So here is the rub, Len Wiseman (Underworld trilogy, Live Free or Die Hard) is directing the new Total Recall reboot. For those of us that were fans of the original that starred Arnold Schwarznegger, let me tell you this young hottie – ladies he’s taken – is just hungry enough to actually make this a solid film. He’s not too full of himself where he would make it crappy or a complete suckfest!!
I mean honestly who didn’t like the Underworld movies, pairing Vampires and werewolves together in a way that didn’t make you retch and made you a fan of the series instantly. I will concede that the first film was the best but the second only sucked because of Scott Speedman (Underworld, The Strangers), honestly the guy is always doing something he should be avoiding on camera. Yes, he is hot if you are into that blonde haired blue eye thing but really can we truly base a films quality on abs and a smile?????
You know what? Don’t answer that!
This guy is totally cool and sort of from that creative hobo chic place when it comes to directing. He can pull off gritty and action, that is at the very least quasi believable. Plus, we always love a guy that is totally into his wife, because it means he can commit to a film. They are an adorable couple and they photograph well.
The deal is that Colin Farrell (SWAT, In Brudges) will get to play the lead as Doug Quaid/Hauser. This will be pretty interesting since Colin will have a completely different feel than Arnold had in the original since he just isn’t that buff. Not to say that he isn’t easy on the eyes – he is easy on the eyes just look at him – however, acting has to be something we can feel on screen so he will need to dig deep to make this character his own and not a cheap knock off of the original. Seriously people, we can all head out to Canal Street to get a knock off hand bag or we can make our way to fifth avenue and drop a couple grand on that Louis Vitton bag.
Now for the interesting part. So the rumors were that there were a whole host of women in consideration for playing the part of Lori, Quaids wife who of course was originally played by Sharon Stone. Let us not forget, that was one of the first times on screen that a woman got a bullet between the eyes folks, cinema history. News on the block right now is that Len’s better half Kate Beckinsale (Underworld, serendipity, The kids are alright) has been offered the part. If this news is true, which so far Huffington Post is carrying the story as well, then she beat out Diane Krueger (Inglorious Basterds, National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets) and Jessica Biel (The A-team, The Illusionist).
This leaves the part of Melina, the prostitute turned activist still open for discussion. Right now the news is sparse but the story is that Len is considering the likes of Eva Mendes (2Fast2Furious, The Spirit) and Rosario Dawson (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The 25th Hour). Each of these ladies are great for the part however, Len, if I might peak your interest have you considered and I’m just spit-balling here: Sophia Vegara (Modern Family), I can’t think of a movie she’s been in since Four Brothers, my assumption is that you’re avoiding her due to her stature, however, she would give the movie a bit of spice and she can pull off the action sequences. There is also Zoe Saldana (Avatar, The Losers) now she does have the athletic build and she could make it believable on screen. Now this pick will seem left field but if we lower her butch factor she can work, Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar, SWAT, Girlfight). Again, athletic in stature and she can pull off the fight scenes. The key with making her work is to butch down, she has an aggressive gait that transfers to the screen, so you’ll have to work to bring out her inner sexpot. Now a really solid pick could also be Paz Vega (Spanglish), she is pretty she has that vixen appeal, now the fight scenes maybe the one things you have to work a bit on, but you could make it work with some elbow grease.
I actually love the casting of Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the middle) as Cohaagen. He has a creepy element that will make it sell. The taxi driver will be the hard one, who could really give cheesy cab driver and then flip it later on…..Chris Rock (Grown Ups, Lethal Weapon 4) does come to mind….but that seems almost too easy. There is always taking someone like Idris Elba (Takers, The Losers) but it might make it fall flat. Not that he isn’t a really great actor but maybe not for that part.
Well Len, if you ever read this, think about what I am saying here. You have yet another shot at greatness my friend. Who you pick can make all the difference in how this is received in theaters. Here’s to hoping you have a hit.
Since I am feeling a bit nostalgic here’s a look at the trailer for the original movie…yes people we have come a long way when you look at this….Rolos!!!!
Game of Thrones is savage in a manner that I didn’t consider possible. There is sex, but surprisingly it doesn’t over power the whole feel of the show. Sean Bean (Ronin, GoldenEye) as Ned Stark is great. It’s clear that he is a somewhat haunted man, with demons that will clearly have a latent bearing on how he acts as the story moves forward.
Then there is Emilia Clarke (Triassic Attack, Doctors) who plays Daeneryrs Targaryen, who is totally pimped out by her own brother to some totally guttural dudes so that he can reclaim his throne. She looks like a kid, and yes the whole thing looks so real it sort of feels like R. Kelly‘s sex tape, but I digress.
Then there are the Lannister’s – MESSY!!!! That is the best way to describe them, you have some high level of incest which would turn your stomach, there is blatant pompousness on all accounts from Jaime Lannister, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Kingdom of Heaven, Blackhawk Down) and his ‘alleged’ sister Cersei, played by Lena Headey (300, Sarah Connor Chronicles), they totally do something unthinkable that literally had me with my mouth open catching flies. I think I was stuck there at least a few minutes.
Then there is their halfling brother, who is overcompensating on so many counts, I’m sure that if there were psychology back then he should have been one of the first ones on the couch, only following his brother and sister.
In general, its become clear that poor Ned will need to realize fast that in order to survive he will need to be ruthless. Oh, but I almost forgot, there is a bastard son who is raised as a son to Ned, but its clear that the wife, Catelyn Stark, played by Michelle Fairley (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Others) would prefer for him to not show his face anywhere near the family she’s built. Ned has a large brood of children and his need to stick to the customs of the past will be his demise if he doesn’t begin to change his thinking. He is in many ways apart of an old guard that for all intents and purposes no longer exists in the way that he sees it. Most of this lends itself to the fact that he’s remained apart from the main goings on by living so far away from everything.
We shall see what goes on next week, but I am looking forward to seeing at least one, if not two of the Lannister’s murdered this season. They have to die, there is no way that the kind of backstabbing and manipulation they are dishing out would go unpunished. I’m thinking a nice barbaric twist with the creepy guy with the manscara coming in and soiling their good name by putting a nice hurting on Cersei. I mean lets face it, it’s her ambitions driving that bus. Sidebar: that hair color does nothing for her face and she needs to go back to being a brunette.
If you missed the first episode, try to catch up, I have a feeling this one might go the distance.
